The Weaving Technique

The Jamdani weaving technique is the most refined weaving technique and is often referred to as the mother of all weaves. The word Jamdani is derived from the Persian word – ‘jam' meaning flower, and ‘dani' a vase.
Made from a gossamer pure cotton yarn, a jamdani is so light that it's often referred to as thin air and it can move with the lightest breeze. The Jamdani from Banaras was mostly done on cotton but with changing times we also see jamdani on katan and kora silk. In banaras we often use Ektara technique to weave pure silver and gold zari in fine cotton and silks. The jamdani is truly a saree connoisseur's delight and an heirloom that deserves much respect for the sheer effort that went into weaving each masterpiece

The Design Technique

Handwoven sarees from banaras having small distinct motifs spread all over are known as bootidar sarees. The most commonly used bootis are Angoor Bel, Gojar Bel (mostly used in borders), Lattar Bel, Khulta Bel, Baluchar Bel, Latiffa Bootii, Mehrab Bel, Kalma Booti, Patti Booti, Mehrab Jaal, Baluchar Boota, etc. Banarasi sarees having small separate motifs all over the saree are referred to as Bootidar.
