Arashi Shibori on Pure Silk

Two Nations. Two Crafts. One Expression.

In Japan, the art of Shibori transforms fabric through the considered interplay of folds, bindings and dye. Among its distinctive expressions is Arashi Shibori, a resist-dyeing technique named after arashi, the Japanese word for storm, celebrated for the sweeping diagonals and rain-like streaks that emerge on cloth.

The process begins with pure silk, wrapped diagonally around a slender pole, bound with thread and compressed into intricate folds. As colour meets the gathered fabric, it travels along the contours, finding its way through some layers while others resist its passage. The bindings are then released, the silk unfurled, and a striking composition of fluid lines, shifting hues and organic patterns comes to life.

For Aikya, this Japanese textile tradition finds expression in Jaipur, India, where skilled artisans bring the art of Arashi Shibori to life on pure silk. The natural lustre of the fabric lends depth to every shade, while the distinctive patterns create movement across the drape. Each saree bears the individual character of the dyeing process, making the textile itself the centrepiece.

Meaning unity, Aikya celebrates the meeting of two distinct craft traditions: the artistry of Japanese Arashi Shibori and the craftsmanship of Indian artisans. Connected through a shared devotion to the handmade, they come together in a collection that honours the beauty of process, the richness of pure silk and the possibilities that emerge when craft crosses borders.

Inspired by Japan. Handmade in India. United through craft.
