Katan is a thread, prepared by twisting a different number of silk filaments according to requirement. This gives a firm structure to the background fabric. Katan is a plain woven fabric with pure silk threads. It consists of two threads twisted together and is mostly used for the warp of light fabrics and sarees. Sometimes 2 filaments can be used to make the warp or weft to incorporate a texture or design.
Katan silk is the fine, soft and delicately lustrous kind of silk that has made Banarasi renowned the world over. Katan silk fabrics are made using the finest quality of Mulberry Silk in both the warp and the weft, woven in a plain weave.
A variation of Katan Silk fabric is Silk by Georgette (also called Katan Georgette or Summer Silk or Silk Georgette). This is a pure silk fabric and is obtained by using twisted silk yarns in the warp or the weft. The resultant silk fabric is thinner and lighter in weight than katan, making it suitable for wearing even in the hotter months of the year (hence, the name summer silk).
Phekwa is a weaving style from banaras, where the weft yarn is interlaced in the warp from one end to the other creating textures on the surface of the cloth also called the zamin. This can be done with single silk yarn or resham or zari, or both can be wound around shuttles.
This is one of the most widely used banarasi handloom weaving techniques where the motifs are woven together as opposed to kadhwa saress, thus taking lesser time in completing a saree. This weaving style leaves a large proportion of the silk or zari thread at the back of the saree where there is no motif at the front. These threads at the back are then cut, once the saree is complete. Mostly the ladies of the house help in cutting and cleaning this extra float
Jangla is one of oldest and most rich patterns, the Jangla is truly representative of a banarasi. Floral patterns, paisley intertwine in brocade or kadhwa weaving on silk, kora or satin fabric. An interplay of floral jaals cover the saree or dupatta in Kadhwa and Kadhiyal weave with meenakari to create a rich design with or without contrasting borders. The jaal is enhanced with jewelled meenakari. This is one of the oldest and most complex weaving techniques from banaras.
