Banaras Baluchar sari in Mauve
The History
The weaving of Baluchari sareees stopped in Bengal with the passing away of Dubraj Das in 1903. He was a master Nakshaband.
The traditional Baluchari saree used low twist malda silk for the warp and untwisted silk for the weft and the meenakari motifs were woven using untwisted silk
The Benarasi Baluchar
When the Baluchari was being revived in the 1950s, the jala could be made only at Benares, where there were still nakshabands practising the trade. Kalloo Hafiz also known as Ali Hasan came up with a reproduction of the original Baluchari. Kalloo Hafiz also won the First National Award for Textiles in 1953 for reviving the Baluchar
The Fourth Generation of Kalloo Hafiz's family weaves the Baluchari now using malda silk yarns on an intricate Jala loom.
The family has a Padam Shri and several National and State awards.
Craft - Banarasi Baluchar is divided into three parts the elaborate pallu with elaborate nakkashi, the border carries forward the theme of the pallu and the body has motifs. The pallu usually has the kalka motif in the centre. Kalka or the Large Paisley is styled in many different ways in a Baluchar and is always the Highlight of the saree
The Sarees are dyed by the same family in vegetable colors keeping the tradition pure
