Details
Handloom Chanderi in a soft pastel green becomes a canvas for Madhubani storytelling in this saree from WeaverStory. Birds, flowers and leafy branches fill its pallu and borders, each painted by hand with a bamboo pen. Small flowers scattered across the body balance the detailed painting, letting the fabric and artwork be appreciated together.
The pallu brings together birds and flowering plants in a carefully composed scene. Pairs of birds gather around large round floral forms, while smaller birds sit among winding stems and leaves. Red, orange, yellow, teal and deep blue lend colour to the pale green background. Fine dark lines trace the feathers, petals and foliage, with closely drawn strokes and small dots adding detail within each motif.
Along the broad edge, paired birds and round floral forms appear again, creating a distinctive painted border across the shoulder and around the lower drape. A narrower band carries red-and-yellow flowers joined by green leaves, framed by rows of small triangles and fine lines. These recurring details connect the pallu, border and body, giving the painting a sense of continuity as the saree is draped.
Nature lies at the heart of this piece. Birds, flowers and foliage share the same space, reflecting the relationship between everyday life and the natural world expressed through Madhubani storytelling. The repeated pairs of birds and branches filled with flowers suggest companionship and abundance. Its story unfolds through familiar forms, carefully placed color, and the patient repetition of lines.
The saree is first woven on a handloom and then painted with a bamboo pen by women artisans practicing the Madhubani style of storytelling. The painting is created within a cottage industry in the Madhubani district of Bihar, by a women’s self-help group led by a National Award-winning artisan. Working during the day alongside household and family responsibilities, these women bring skill, care and individual expression to every piece.
Each saree takes approximately 22–25 days to create, with around 110 hours of handloom weaving and hand painting. From the fine markings within the birds to the leaves along the border, every detail reflects this sustained work by hand. The coming together of textile and painting makes it an art piece to wear, cherish and pass on.
The soft pastel green Chanderi is a considered choice for festive gatherings, family celebrations and cultural occasions. Pair it with a plain emerald green blouse and understated gold jewelry to complement the colors of the painting.
