Katan is a thread, prepared by twisting a different number of silk filaments according to requirement. This gives a firm structure to the background fabric. Katan is a plain woven fabric with pure silk threads. It consists of two threads twisted together and is mostly used for the warp of light fabrics and sarees. Sometimes 2 filaments can be used to make the warp or weft to incorporate a texture or design.

Katan silk is the fine, soft and delicately lustrous kind of silk that has made Banarasi renowned the world over. Katan silk fabrics are made using the finest quality of Mulberry Silk in both the warp and the weft, woven in a plain weave. A variation of Katan Silk fabric is Silk by Georgette (also called Katan Georgette or Summer Silk or Silk Georgette). This is a pure silk fabric and is obtained by using twisted silk yarns in the warp or the weft. The resultant silk fabric is thinner and lighter in weight than katan, making it suitable for wearing even in the hotter months of the year (hence, the name summer silk).

The Weaving Technique

Phekwa is a weaving style from banaras, where the weft yarn is interlaced in the warp from one end to the other creating textures on the surface of the cloth also called the zamin. This can be done with single silk yarn or resham or zari, or both can be wound around shuttles.
This is one of the most widely used banarasi handloom weaving techniques where the motifs are woven together as opposed to kadhwa saress, thus taking lesser time in completing a saree. This weaving style leaves a large proportion of the silk or zari thread at the back of the saree where there is no motif at the front. These threads at the back are then cut, once the saree is complete. Mostly the ladies of the house help in cutting and cleaning this extra float

The Design Technique

Handwoven sarees from banaras having small distinct motifs spread all over are known as bootidar sarees. The most commonly used bootis are Angoor Bel, Gojar Bel (mostly used in borders), Lattar Bel, Khulta Bel, Baluchar Bel, Latiffa Bootii, Mehrab Bel, Kalma Booti, Patti Booti, Mehrab Jaal, Baluchar Boota, etc. Banarasi sarees having small separate motifs all over the saree are referred to as Bootidar.
